New Study Adds To Body Of Evidence Supporting That Diachrome® Can Significantly Improve Glycemic Control And Insulin Sensitivity In People With Type 2 Diabetes

Findings Also Provide Evidence that Diachrome May Help Mitigate Weight Gain Commonly Associated with Prescription Diabetes Medications

PURCHASE, NY, August 9, 2006 – Nutrition 21, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXXI) today commented on a study published in the August issue of Diabetes Care  showing that daily supplementation with chromium picolinate – an active ingredient in Diachrome® – can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes when taken in conjunction with an oral antidiabetic agent better than an oral antidiabetic agent alone.  Findings also support Diachrome’s ability to help mitigate weight gain typically associated with the use of common prescription anti-diabetic medications.
This study, conducted by researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA, supports previous findings showing that chromium picolinate, when given in therapeutic doses such as those contained in Diachrome, has a positive effect on insulin function, blood glucose and cholesterol metabolism.  Diachrome, a non-prescription, nutrient-based adjunct, is the only nutrient brand formulated for people with type 2 diabetes that contains chromium picolinate.  Clinical studies have demonstrated that Diachrome can help people better manage their blood sugar and cholesterol levels in as little as 30 days with optimal results in 90 days.
“This study adds to previous research showing the benefits of Diachrome,” said Burcham Fuqua, MD, the lead investigator of past clinical trials that have examined the efficacy of Diachrome.  “I believe that patients with type 2 diabetes and doctors who treat this patient population should consider adding Diachrome to diabetes treatment regimens, as it has been clinically demonstrated to improve blood sugar control, enhance the body’s response to insulin, and improve lipid parameters. These changes seen with Diachrome should translate into numerous health benefits including improved cardiovascular health.”
The chromium picolinate in Diachrome has been recognized as safe by many of the world’s leading government and academic research institutions, including the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, the Institute of Medicine and the UK’s Food Standards Agency. Diachrome is available nationwide at CVS pharmacy in the Home Diagnostics/Diabetes Care section.
“Diachrome is a cost effective solution to help people with diabetes better manage their condition,” said Paul Intlekofer, CEO, Nutrition 21.  “We look forward to the completion of additional clinical studies to continue to validate the long-term health benefits associated with this nutritional therapy.”
